ABOUT THE PIECE:

"The Song of Trees shows the strong energy of a big tree, floating and falling leaves, and finally the joy of the rise of the shutes. The basic theme of this piece is to feel the whole life of the tree. After the short sequence, suddenly the theme appears showing the existence of the big tree. Then the theme is divided into each phrase changing the form. One phrase is sung quietly and the other is showing the energy which gradually increases the power and reaches the climax. The phrases are as if they are showing the birth of the young tree. Finally the short coda brings back to the fragment of the first theme."

ABOUT THE PERFORMER:

Having studied marimba in Japan with Keiko Abe (JP), Felix Reyes has long had an interest in commissions and projects revolved around and promote Japanese contemporary marimba music. As a rising percussionist, Felix Reyes is always looking for ways to incorporate his chamber music training with his studies of Japanese music. As a native to New York, Felix has performed with chamber ensembles throughout New York City in venues such as Carnegie Hall, National Sawdust, The Lincoln Center, Kaufman Music Centerl, and universities across the U.S. such as Indiana University, Princeton University, the University of Notre Dame, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Humboldt State University, and the University of Georgia. Felix has also performed internationally in countries such as El Salvador, Japan and Germany. 

Over the years in his travels he has performed in countless workshops and has worked with countless acclaimed international artists and composers that include all of Sō Percussion (USA), Third Coast Percussion (USA), Katarzyna Mycka (DE),  Ney Rosauro (BR), Jean Geoffrey (F), Conrado Moya (E), Filip Mercep (CRO), Michael Colgrass (USA), Dai Fujikura (JP), Jennifer Hidgon (USA), and Kaoru Watanabe (JP).

Felix Reyes recently graduated with his Master’s in Percussion Performance from Bowling Green State University where he studied percussion under Dr. Daniel Piccolo (USA) and marimba specialist Dr. Isabelle Huang(TW). Felix has also received his Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance at the State University of New York at Fredonia under the direction of Dr. Karolyn Stonefelt (USA) and has studied Marimba Performance at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Sengawa, Japan with legendary marimba virtuoso Keiko Abe (JP).

Felix currently lives in New York City where he works as studio manager for Sandbox Percussion and international taiko soloist Kaoru Watanabe, is a freelance percussionist, and teaches percussion privately in various capacities, including a roster of students from Brooklyn and Long Island, NY. His current activities include organizing a tour throughout New York City and Arcata, California, with Swiss percussion soloist Fabian Ziegler (CH) for May 2018, and working on other Vic Firth premieres of new commissions by Princeton composers Wally Gunn (USA), and Dave Molk (USA). He is a proud endorser of Vic Firth sticks and mallets.
