Warcraft vs Assassin's Creed: Most Anticipated Video Game Movie 2016

Video game movies will finally get their due in 2016 and we’re putting them to the test right now on Clevver Newsfeed! Grab your quarters and hit start as we decide which 2016 video game movie will get the high score and which will be reduced to player two. Video game movies have been hit or miss at best, but two new films on the horizon – Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed – give us some hope, but which are we most excited for and think can potentially launch video games into a viable movie genre? First up, let’s take a look at each game’s fan base. World of Warcraft is a monstrously huge game that has been a staple in the world of video games for over a decade. It has remained one of the most consistently played video games of all-time with more than 50 BILLION HOURS! To say that it has a dedicated fan base would be a severe understatement. That doesn’t mean Assassin’s Creed is a slouch. The long running adventure series revolutionized console gaming and has birthed fifteen incarnations over eight years. Unlike Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed has had a presence on every major console as well as PC and even mobile, making it extremely accessible. With over 80 million copies sold, there’s a lot of gaming assassin’s out there, but they tend not to be quite as passionate about the game as their Warcraft counterparts. Point Warcraft! So Warcraft may have the bigger fan base, but which movie has the bigger cast? Assassin’s Creed is sports a slew of big name stars led by Michael Fassbender. Fassbender will be joined by The Dark Knight Rises Marion Cotillard, Batman v Superman’s Jeremy Irons, 12 Years a Slave’s Michael Kenneth Williams and Harry Potter’s Brendan Gleeson. While Warcraft does feature several recognizable faces, including Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper and Paula Patton, it doesn’t feature the big name celebrities as Assassin’s Creed and many of the actors will be computer generated utilizing motion capture. While we are always open to seeing an ensemble cast of lesser known stars, we are going to have to give this point to Assassin's Creed. There's just something about the cast that intrigue us and gets us excited for the final product. While a big fan base and big stars is important, the real test is what the movies will actually be about. Though much of the plot of Assassin’s Creed remains a mystery, we do know the film will introduce Fassbender as a new character named “Callum Lynch” who will explore the world of his 15th century Spanish ancestor and learn the abilities needed to face modern day Templars. This is definitely a smart move as it allows for a fresh story and since it’s still in the same universe as the games, allows for the opportunity for fan favorites to cameo. As for Warcraft, the film version will take place during the First War with the orcs fleeing their dying homeworld and coming face-to-face with humans. With most of the characters coming directly from the game, including main characters Lothar and Durotan, fans of the game should definitely feel right at home and will likely be eagerly awaiting to see some of the games action play out in live-action on the big screen. Starting from the beginning will also allow newbies to ease into the epic storyline. While we’re greatly looking forward to Assassin’s Creed, we have to give this one to Warcraft. It just feels like it will be closer to the feeling of the game while still giving us something we haven’t seen before. With two points to one, it looks like Warcraft wins title of most anticipated video game movie of 2016, but what do you think?
