The pineal gland (epiphysis cerebri, pineal body) is a small structure in the diecephalon that functions as an endocrine gland.
It rests between the posterior aspect of the thalami and projects posteriorly from the wall of the third ventricle. The pineal gland stalk of the gland has a superior and an inferior lamina, connecting the pineal body with both cerebral hemispheres.
The pineal gland is an endocrine gland that functions to produce the hormone melatonin – a hormone that affects the state of wakefulness and sleep as well as photoperiodic or seasonal functions. It is also believed to have a reproductive function associated with the onset of puberty.
In this tutorial we will go over the important anatomical aspects of the pineal gland:
- 0:32 pineal gland definition and location
- 0:59 pineal gland structure
- 1:42 pineal recess and ventricle relations
- 2:11 pineal gland function
