The paired lacrimal bone is the smallest skull bone and sits inside the orbit on its anterior medial side. It matures through intramembranous ossification.
The lacrimal bone has two surfaces: a lateral (orbital) and medial (nasal) surface. The lateral surface features the lacrimal groove forming the fossa for the lacrimal sac, together with the lacrimal groove of the maxilla. Posteriorly the fossa is limited by the posterior lacrimal crest. The medial surface contributes to the middle nasal meatus and comes in contact with the ethmoid cells.
In this tutorial we will explore the most important features of the anatomy of the lacrimal bone:
- 0:09 lacrimal bone location and structure
- 0:33 lacrimal bone surfaces
- 1:09 relations to skull bones
