The stylohyoid muscle is a slender muscle that belongs to the suprahyoid muscles and runs from the styloid process of the temporal bone to the hyoid bone. Together with the other suprahyoid muscles and adjacent tissue it forms the floor of the mouth.
It receives its nerve supply by the facial nerve from the mandibular nerve. The stylohyoid muscle elevates the hyoid bone together with the digastric muscle, and also pulls the hyoid bone backwards. It is therefore involved in swallowing, speech and chewing, making it an accessory muscle of mastication.
In this video tutorial we will go over the most important facts about the stylohyoid muscle: origin, insertion, innervation and functions.
- 0:31 stylohyoid muscle origin and insertion
- 0:52 innervation
- 0:59 stylohyoid function and actions of the other suprahyoid muscles
