The human spine is as unique as it gets. While many animals have curves in their spines, none have as many as us humans - and that's due to our bipedal upright posture.
We have four curves in our spine - the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral curves. These curves are crucial for maintaining spinal health throughout our lives.
The spine (or vertebral column) is part of the larger axial skeleton. It houses the spinal cord which is a key structure of the central nervous system; and has 33 individual vertebrae - 24 of which are separated by intervertebral discs. These allow slight movement of the vertebrae and act as shock absorbers.
In this video, we go over:
1:17 the difference between lordotic and kyphotic curves
1:30 why these curves are categorized as primary and secondary curves
1:43 what your spine looked like when you were a baby (very different from now!)
1:50 when and how each curve developed
2:58 what would happen if your spine had excessive curvature
3:05 the difference between lordosis, kyphosis and scoliosis
4:38 what would happen if your spine had no curvature!
4:51 a comparison of our spines with other animals (including quadrupeds and the African apes)
Oh, and there's twerking....lots of twerking.
